Piano di Sorrento is a pretty town that occupies the central part of the Sorrento peninsula, boasts ancient historical origins. Proof of this is the detection of the remains of a village and a necropolis dating back to the second millennium BC. The town is divided into hamlets including San Liborio, a medieval village characterized by ancient houses grouped around the small chapel of S. Maria delle Grazie. Among the buildings of greatest interest are: the Villa Fondi de Sangro, a beautiful historic building overlooking the sea, now home to the George Vallet archaeological museum; Villa Lauro, one of the greatest expressions of neoclassical architecture, now home to the MSC shipping company; the Colonna castle built in 1872 on the ruins of the ancient Abbey of San Pietro and Cermenna and the Church of San Michele.
