Thirty feet of hot mud and volcanic ash buried this Roman city completely when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. You will have a detailed private walking tour of this once-prosperous trading center, established in 7th century B.C.
° After your Pompeii tour, you will go to Herculaneum for another guided stroll, also destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. this magnificent Roman town was an holiday resort, you will admire its wonderful houses with impressive frescoes and mosaics. While Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii, its buildings are much better preserved.
° After your guided tour to Pompeii and Herculaneum, you will have time for a lunch break to recharge the batteries for the trip up to Mt. Vesuvius.
° The tour of Mt. Vesuvius begins with the slow trip up the windy road up the hill until the parking lot. If you want to reach the top of the crater, which reaches nearly 4,200 feet, you must leave the car behind here and take a 30-minute hike of moderate difficulty. The views and fresh air here are well worth the effort.
Return back to the parking lot and drive back to the cruise terminal.
